“What is all that men have done and thought over thousands of years, compared with one moment of love ?” This famous quote from Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843), German poet and philosopher who spent half of his life reclusive in a room, is taken from the novel Hyperion where the immense – and tragic – love of his life finds there a divine incarnation. In a work inseparable from his experience, love, nature and the sacred are linked to aim both at introspection, at a civilizational ideal and at a conquest of beauty in the sensitive.
Resonating with a current context where human ties are weakening, Laurent Pernot offers an exhibition that highlights what brings together and seems to unite us universally, across ages and cultures. Inspired by and sometimes borrowing from Hölderlin’s words, between language and image, new works by the artist invite to celebrate time and to meditate on this human feeling which characterizes and magnetizes all existential thought: “We are miserable, but love suddenly saves us “.
