Rush to Perdition plunges us into the darkness of the abandoned gold mines of the world’s first and one of the largest gold rushes, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Illuminated by the flickering light of flashlights, the images of religious sculptures and paintings created thanks to the lucrative and tragic economy of this period, using gold mined from these mountains, gradually blend into the dark, glittering caverns. The camera “brings the ghosts of history to life in the cavernous darkness of the mines, but also in the liturgical art of the 17th century.” Roxana Azimi.
